Glimpse of Gregory - 5th October 2018

As we roll into our fire danger season, it’s important to prepare your homes and properties for the possibility of a bushfire.  As a family, now is the time to discuss your individual fire plan, what your family will do if a bushfire is coming for your property.  Remember that it’s vital to be fire safe.

Supporting Remote Pubs:

As many of you may be aware, over the recent months the Parliamentary Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee has been examining the Liquor (Rural Hotels Concession) Amendment Bill.  This bill, when enacted, will reduce licence fees for pubs in “Very Remote Australia” from $3,600 down to $350.

It’s disgraceful that pubs in towns like Yaraka, Isisford, Blackall and Longreach pay the same licence fees as pubs in Townsville, Rockhampton and Brisbane.

Shadow Attorney General David Janetzki and I toured a number of Western Queensland pubs last year to discuss the changes with them.  It’s great to see that the Committee and the Government is finally seeing some of the issues in Western Queensland and acting to fix them.

Longreach State School 125th Anniversary:

It was a honour to attend the 125th Anniversary of the Longreach State School as their guest of honour late last month.

The Longreach State School opened in 1893 with an enrolment of 102 students, and since that day it has been a mainstay of the region for all of its 125 years.

Schools, like Longreach State School, hold a special place in their community.  Unlike many metropolitan schools, parents send their children to the same school they went to, as did their parents and grandparents.

The Longreach State School is well known throughout the region by parents as a safe and rewarding place to send their children for their schooling.  It’s held in such a high regard by the community, as they provide the social, emotional and educational wellbeing that is so vital in the formative years of a child’s life.
